PR, MARKETING & MEDIA DEPARTMENT
NEWSROOM DESK

My name is Andrea and I am from Spain, specifically from Ourense which is a small city located in Galicia, in the northwest of the country. When I turned eighteen, I went to study Biology in Santiago de Compostela, but I soon realized that it was not what I expected so I decided to change to study Criminology in the same city.

Once I finished my degree and like all students I found myself lost and without knowing what the next step would be, but soon a new option opened up in front of me: The European Union. In this way, I did a Master's Degree specialized in it and began to prepare the entrance exams to work as a civil servant in one of its institutions.

I chose this option after my career since I am a person who loves to travel, especially traveling around Europe and getting to know the cultures of each and every one of the member countries closely and being able to enjoy the diversity that exists, as well as try to learn the different languages of each of the countries (at least a few words) since I speak Spanish (and one of its co-official languages which is Galician), English and during the lockdown I began to study German and still today I continue to study it.

This internship here at ICDET and in Sofia I consider it a great opportunity to grow both personally and professionally and to know the Bulgarian culture which is unknown to me.

I am Nuria Fernández Cancelo, a 22-year old girl born in Santiago de Compostela (Spain). I am only child in a big family, but since I was very little I was raised with two of my cousins and now they are like my siblings. I started dancing ballet when I was 3 years old, then I continued with modern dance and now it is my favorite kind of dance.

At the age of 12 years old I started to study german at high school and when I became 15 years old I started being more interested on international issues, as well as learning new languages and travel arround the world. When I finished high school I decided to study Economics at the University of Santiago de Compostela. On my third year I did one year abroad with the Erasmus + Programme at the Johannes Gutenberg Univerität in Mainz (Germany). After finishing my Erasmus year I came back to Santiago, my home city, and graduated this last summer 2020.

While I was on my last year of university I started thinking what I would like to do next, and as long as I did not have the opportunity to do an internship during my bachelor, I thought it was a good idea to go abroad to do my internship to prove myself and my limits, and learn a lot from this experience. So finally I went to speak with the head department of the international mobility issues at my home university and tell him my idea to do an internship abroad and how could I apply for it and a lot of questions regarding this topic. He told me it was a very good idea and that people are very happy with this type of experiences, so finally he told me about a page called EU4EU, wich is a firm that puts in contact local students with foreign firms who are searching for interns. At the end, I started searching for organizations hosting interns for more than 2 months, and finally I found out ICDET, which I thought it was a really interesting organization to do my internships as it is linked with my personal expectations.

Here, during my stay here in Sofia (Bulgaria) I would like to learn how to work on an international environment, as well as develop my soft skills and prove what I know and what I can learn from this internship developing as much as I can personally and professionally.

Who am I? Where do I come from? Why am I here?

These questions are central in everyone’s life. Through the following lines, I will attempt to respond to the crucial question “Who am I?” by responding to “Where do I come from?” and “What am I doing here?”.

My childhood

Let’s start by presenting myself. I am Astrée, a 23 years old French woman. I was born in Paris and grew up in its suburb. Being the youngest of a five children family and by taking example on my siblings, I became rapidly self-sufficient.

I worked well at school and enjoyed my spare time with many after-school activities such as: classical dance, figure skating, horse riding, clarinet playing in an orchestra. However, I gradually quit everything to focus on my studies at high school, and passed my Economics baccalaureate.

My studies at the university

When I just turned 18 years old, I started to study at the University of Paris V. I worked intensively during two years and got a degree in technics of Marketing.

In order to reward myself, I decided to start studying abroad, that is why I left Paris to go to Berlin. I studied there one full year and graduated with a Bachelor in Business & Administration. Because all the courses were in German and with native people, it was a great challenge for me. To be honest, this year spent in a foreign country, was ambivalent. It is true that I experienced both the best and the hardest moments of my life. In the end, I came out of this experience stronger and I learned that anything is never acquired forever. We always need to fight and to work hard to get what we want. In clear, this year abroad definitively taught me to persevere, to listen to myself and to believe in my dreams. While abroad in Germany, I had to come back often to France to take exams for joining a public School of Business Administration. I passed the exam and started to study Management in Bordeaux as the first year of a Master degree. I finally started a second year of a Master degree in the field of International Management. Its courses content combines a wide variety of subjects, making it both interesting and intense in terms of workload.

The reasons why I am abroad

I have chosen this university course in Bordeaux because it includes experiences abroad. Thus, after living one and a half year in Bordeaux, I moved to Estonia in Tallinn. There, I have completed an exchange semester, as an Erasmus student in the field of Business and Governance. Although this experience occurred during the beginning of Corona pandemic, it was amazing and unforgettable. In a few words, I am grateful because I have met extraordinary people who inspired me.

I am now accomplishing an internship of six months in Sofia (Bulgaria), working for the Media department of the ICDET NGO. Through this traineeship abroad, I expect to develop both my soft and hard skills, in order to work later in an international environment.

To conclude, all those experiences abroad confirmed my taste in traveling and meeting people from different parts of the world. I am attracted by this challenge of working in a new environment. Thus, I will seek a long-term job in a multicultural company abroad, once my Master thesis written and my International Management Diploma obtained.
